NEW YORK – A 14-month-old girl died after being left in a vehicle for approximately eight hours on Long Island, as disclosed by Suffolk County Police on Tuesday.
The incident occurred when Chyasia Evans’ grandmother, a 54-year-old Greenlawn woman, forgot to drop off the child at daycare on Monday and proceeded to go to work. The young girl remained secured in her car seat in the back of the vehicle.
It was only around 4:20 p.m., about eight hours later, when the grandmother was supposed to pick up the child from daycare on Redwood Lane in Smithtown, that she realized she had left her granddaughter in the car, according to Suffolk County Police.
She was taken to Saint Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, where she was pronounced deceased.
The child’s aunt mentioned that the daycare facility did not notify anyone that the child had not been dropped off, which could have potentially provided crucial life-saving hours for the little girl.
Authorities are conducting an investigation, and no criminal charges have been filed as of yet.
