A teenage boy, involved in the shooting of an Indiana sheriff’s deputy during a welfare check on Tuesday, was later discovered deceased inside the home, according to authorities.

Deputies responded to the home in Martinsville around 7:30 a.m., following a 911 call expressing concern about a friend’s potential self-harm indicated in a social media post, as revealed by Morgan County Sheriff Rich Myers.

Upon arrival, deputies, attempting to make contact, received no response at the front door. Deputy Mallory K. Schwab, who recently joined the sheriff’s department, was inspecting the exterior when gunfire erupted from inside, resulting in her sustaining a single gunshot wound to her upper right shoulder. Deputy Schwab received treatment at an Indianapolis hospital and has been released, Sheriff Myers confirmed.

Following the shooting, SWAT teams from Morgan County and adjacent Johnson County secured the area around the home. Despite multiple attempts to communicate with the young suspect inside, including calls to a cellphone, authorities were unsuccessful. Tear gas was deployed into the residence.

The subsequent search revealed the lifeless body of a 15-year-old boy, with Sheriff Myers emphasizing the family’s grief over their loss. The county coroner’s office will determine the cause of the teen’s death. Sheriff Myers mentioned uncertainty regarding the number of shots fired inside the residence but clarified that no officers discharged their weapons.

The investigation into the shooting is now under the oversight of the Indiana State Police.
