IRWIN, TN. – Two people were killed in East Tennessee after a semitruck crashed into a home — the truck driver has been arrested, according to law enforcement.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol says that Robenson Vertus, a 41-year-old resident of Connecticut, was operating the semitruck along Interstate 26 Westbound on Sunday morning when the vehicle veered off the roadway, passed through a fence, crossed another road, and ultimately collided with a parked car before crashing into a two-story house.
After striking the house, the truck caught fire, subsequently engulfing the home in flames. Police have confirmed that one individual inside the home was killed in the accident, while another person succumbed to their injuries later at the hospital. A third individual remains hospitalized.
Vertus sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash and received medical treatment before being transported to the Unicoi County Jail.
Vertus has been charged with criminally negligent homicide.
