Gary, Indiana police are investigating the shooting death of a toddler on Friday night. The incident occurred at approximately 7:21 p.m. in the 2100 block of George Street.
Law enforcement received a call from Northlake Methodist Hospital for a 2-year-old who had been shot. According to the child’s mother, her 3-year-old son accidentally shot his younger sibling after discovering a gun in her purse when she left a bedroom.
The 2-year-old succumbed to the injury, as confirmed by the police. The Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force has taken charge of the investigation into the shooting.
The Gary Police Department is urging gun owners to ensure the safety of their firearms by using a gun box or a gun lock. It’s unclear if charges will be filed against the mother.
