In the neighborhood of Red Hook in Brooklyn, authorities have reported that the body of a 9-year-old autistic boy was discovered at the fringes of a waterway, following an incident where he became separated from his family within an Ikea store.

Based on information from law enforcement, the store’s surveillance footage shows the child leaving the Ikea shortly before 9 p.m. ET on Wednesday and proceeding towards the Erie Basin, a man-made sheltered harbor located behind the store.

The New York City Police Department and the Fire Department of the City of New York dispatched a team of patrol officers, aviation units, harbor units, the Technical Assistance Response Unit, K-9s, and divers to locate the missing child.

Several hours later, shortly after midnight on Thursday, the child’s lifeless body was located at the water’s edge behind Ikea. Authorities transported him to New York Presbyterian/Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.

“We at IKEA are devastated by this tragedy. Our hearts are with the family at this difficult time,” the company said in a statement.
