According to Microsoft, a recent cyber attack carried out by hackers in China targeted at least 25 organizations, including multiple government agencies. Among those affected, at least one agency belonged to the United States government.
The breach was initially discovered by an unnamed Federal Civilian Executive Branch (FCEB) agency in mid-June, the cybersecurity watchdog said. Microsoft did not disclose the specific countries or agencies impacted, but emphasized that the hacker group primarily focuses on infiltrating Western governments for espionage purposes.
The breach occurred between May 15 and June 16, and Microsoft’s report on Tuesday evening confirmed that the hackers mainly targeted email accounts. However, they no longer have access to those accounts.
“[We are] closely monitoring what appears to be a significant cybersecurity breach by Chinese intelligence,” said Sen. Mark Warner (D). “It’s clear that the PRC is steadily improving its cyber collection capabilities directed against the U.S. and our allies. Close coordination between the U.S. government and the private sector will be critical to countering this threat.”
Microsoft refrained from stating whether it believes the hacker group has ties to the Chinese government.
