Upstate NY Man Charged With Murder After Shooting Baby With Crossbow
Authorities from the Broome County Sheriff’s Office say a man from New York used a crossbow to shoot at his wife during an argument — but missed — fatally wounding their newborn daughter. The incident occurred in a home in Colesville, New York, at around 5:10 a.m. local time on Monday.
The mother was cradling their three-week-old baby girl when the father, identified as 26-year-old Patrick Proefriedt, allegedly discharged the crossbow. The projectile struck the infant in the upper torso, exited near the armpit, and then struck the mother in the chest.
Proefriedt then purportedly removed the crossbow bolt and attempted to prevent his wife from contacting emergency services before fleeing the location in a red pickup truck.
Deputies were unable to save the baby girl despite their immediate response. The child, named Eleanor Carey, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The injured mother was transported to a hospital for medical treatment, though the severity of her injuries was not disclosed by officials. Proefriedt attempted to evade capture and sought refuge in nearby woods, but law enforcement located him approximately a mile away from the home after his truck became stuck in the mud.
Authorities have charged Proefriedt with second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, and first-degree criminal contempt. He had a history of domestic incidents involving the mother, and there was an active order of protection in effect at the time of the incident.
