On Monday, Mexico’s president urged American citizens not to support GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis due to his state’s implementation of an immigration bill.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he believes the law will lead to discrimination against illegal immigrants.
Effective July 1, the Florida law imposes penalties on employers who hire illegal immigrants and strengthens DeSantis’ program for relocating migrants while curtailing social services for immigrants without permanent legal status.
“We could not remain silent,” said Pres. López Obrador. “Not one vote for those who despise migrants!”
The recently enacted legislation, signed into law by Governor DeSantis last month, expands the obligations of businesses with more than 25 employees to use E-Verify, a federal system used to determine an employee’s eligibility to work in the United States.
Additionally, hospitals that accept Medicaid are now required to include a citizenship question on intake forms.
