A father is currently under custody, accused of fatally shooting a driver who had run over his son in the early hours of Monday morning, as reported by the Person County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Sheriff Jason Wilborn, the incident unfolded when a family of three became stranded due to their car running out of gas on Dink Ashley Road. The family was on foot, making their way back home when a driver hit their 17-year-old son with his truck, tragically leading to the boy’s death. The driver promptly dialed 911 shortly after the collision occurred, around 6:30 a.m.
Subsequently, the father, later identified as Chad Woods, retrieved a firearm and fatally shot the driver. After the shooting, Woods allegedly took possession of the driver’s vehicle and returned to their residence on Cedar Creek.
The sheriff’s office revealed that Woods disposed of the gun used in the shooting by throwing it into a nearby pond. Dive teams extensively searched the pond for hours but have not yet located the weapon. The search is set to resume on Tuesday morning.
The driver who lost his life in the incident has been identified as Jeffery McKay. He was operating a North Carolina Department of Adult Correction vehicle and worked as an electrical supervisor in central engineering.
Chad Woods has been arrested and is facing charges of second-degree murder and larceny of a motor vehicle.
