In Riverside County, Southern California, two Cal Fire helicopters collided mid-air Sunday. The incident took place before 7:20 p.m., as confirmed by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office. The collision occurred near the intersection of Pipeline Road and Apache Trail in Cabazon, coinciding with firefighting efforts against the Broadway Fire that had erupted around 6 p.m. in the vicinity of Broadway and Esperanza avenues.
Among the victims, whose identities remain undisclosed, were a Cal Fire Division Chief, a Cal Fire Captain, and a contracted pilot, officials said.
Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have initiated investigations into the incident.
