Days after her son was charged with committing a tragic school shooting, a Georgia mother was indicted on Monday for a separate incident in which authorities say she tied her own elderly mother to a chair.

Marcee Gray, 43, faces charges including false imprisonment and exploitation and intimidation of a disabled adult or elderly person. The incident in question happened almost a year before her son, Colt Gray, allegedly opened fired at Apalachee High School in Barrow County.

Documents obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution state that after one of Gray’s sisters, a Florida resident, could not get in touch with their mother in early November 2023, she had a friend check on the home. That friend found the victim, a 73-year-old woman, taped at the wrist and ankles to a chair. The friend freed her.

The grandmother, who had been tied there for almost 24 hours, told cops that Marcee Gray was upset after the grandmother refused to join her in confronting Colin Gray, her ex-husband, according to authorities.

“Marcee became upset and told Deborah that she was making her go with her because she was going to kill her ex,” documents reportedly said. “Deborah stated she refused to go and Marcee threw her up against the wall causing a cut on her left wrist. Marcee stated that since Deborah wasn’t going she was going to tie her to a chair and take her phone so she wouldn’t call anyone.”

Marcee Gray also allegedly broke a bathroom mirror and a backdoor in addition to taking her mother’s iPhone. Last year, she was initially arrested for having drugs and damaging her ex’s work vehicle.

But on Sept. 4, Grays’ 14-year-old son Colt opened fire at Apalachee High School, killing four people:

      • 14-year-old student Christian Angulo
      • 14-year-old student Mason Schermerhorn
      • 39-year-old teacher Richard Aspinwall
      • 53-year-old teacher Cristina Irimie

The teen’s father, Colin, faces charges including second-degree murder for allegedly buying Colt the gun, an AR-15 rifle.

Marcee has said that she tried to warn school officials on the morning of the shooting after her son sent her and Colin Gray cryptic messages such as “I’m sorry.”

“’You need to go, like, run to the classroom,’” she told Atlanta ABC affiliate WSB in a Sept. 10 report.
