San Francisco, California (SFPD) — On Thursday, June 22, 2023, at approximately 2:39 a.m., San Francisco police officers from Richmond Station were dispatched to a residence on the 700 block of 31st Avenue for a report of an aggravated assault in progress. Before officers’ arrival, Roland Child, 84, had called police to report an aggravated assault. Roland said that the suspect, his 37-year-old son Marc Child, had killed his 76-year-old mother, Barbara Lai Child, and his dog. An officer arrived on scene and made contact with an 84-year-old father in the doorway of the home. Officer Eduardo Villanueva goes up the stairs and encounters Marc Child, who was armed with a knife, according to authorities.
Despite the officer’s commands to drop the knife, Child advanced towards Villanueva and the officer fired his weapon. From outside the front door, Villanueva fired two shots at Child. The officers used a ballistic shield to move forward and begin providing medical aid after he was shot. Child suffered one gunshot wound to his chest and was taken to a hospital, where he died. Footage that had been blurred for the victim’s privacy showed officers checking the rest of the house, where they discovered the body of 76-year-old, Barbara Child, along with a deceased dog. The father, Roland Child was transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Marc Child was a lawyer who was licensed to practice in the state. Of note, Marc Child was the adopted son of his parents.
Court records indicate that his parents sought a restraining order against their son after he attacked them both in 2021. The son was also at the time living with his elderly parents. In October 2019, Child’s then-girlfriend sought a restraining order against the attorney saying that he punched her in the head at her home in Orange County. She also said that Child showed up at her home shortly after the attack, banged on the door and refused to leave. He then called her 40 times from jail. Police confirmed they had multiple encounters with the adopted son over the years due to drug-related incidents and altercations with law enforcement. Authorities stated that there was once a stay-away order involving the parents.
