Baltimore, Ohio — In Ohio, a tragic incident unfolded when a man, identified as Jonathan Baker, age 23, from North Baltimore, abducted a 7-month-old girl. While fleeing from the police, he crashed his car into a house, resulting in the infant’s death and critical injuries to himself.
The crash occurred on Tuesday, shortly before 4 p.m., in Tiffin.
The Wood County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert after Baker took the child earlier that day, reportedly armed with a gun. Baker contacted the girl’s mother, expressing “homicidal and suicidal feelings,” and claimed to have killed the child, authorities said.
The relationship between Baker and the girl or her mother were not disclosed.
Tiffin Police Chief David Pauly said an off-duty city officer spotted Baker’s vehicle and promptly informed the department officials. The officer then trailed Baker, sharing location updates with colleagues.
Police cruisers attempted to stop Baker’s vehicle, but he accelerated, veering off the road. He traversed the front yard of one residence before colliding with another.
Law enforcement officers shattered the car’s rear window to rescue the infant, who had a bleeding head and experienced labored breathing. Despite being rushed to a hospital, the baby succumbed to her injuries.
Baker was airlifted via helicopter to a hospital in Toledo, where he remains in critical condition, according to authorities.
