Edwin Amaya (Brevard County Jail).

A Florida man allegedly ran over the mother of their child with his pickup truck right in front of her traumatized daughter and horrified neighbors.

It happened around 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the 100 block of S.W. Eighth Street in Pompano Beach, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to the scene and found two victims — 29-year-old Brenda Hernandez Amaya and a 32-year-old man. Paramedics rushed Hernandez Amaya to the hospital where doctors pronounced her dead. The male victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives learned Hernandez-Amaya and the suspect, 32-year-old Edwin Amaya, were arguing over their shared child in the parking lot of the apartment complex as Amaya sat in his Ford F-250. At some point, Amaya allegedly backed up his truck, and then put in drive and made a beeline for Hernandez-Amaya, running her over.

Amaya crashed into some parked cars before fleeing the scene. The male victim tried to hang onto the truck as Amaya was driving away, but fell off, cops said. According to deputies, Amaya ran away on foot but officers arrested him nearby.

The Family told Miami NBC affiliate WTVJ that Amaya and the victim had a 2-year-old son together. She leaves behind two other children, including a 10-year-old daughter who witnessed the crash.

    “I couldn’t cry. I couldn’t talk,” she said. “I went downstairs, I started running.”

Neighbors told local ABC affiliate WPLG that Amaya was intoxicated during the incident.

Amaya is facing a premeditated murder charge, cops say. He is being held at the Broward County Jail without bond.
