Idalia Roars To Hurricane Strength, Takes Aim At Florida’s Gulf Coast

1 year ago 90

Early this morning, Idalia escalated to a Category 1 hurricane, boasting maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. The National Hurricane Center has projected that the system’s intensity could swiftly increase, potentially propelling it to a formidable Category 3 hurricane by the time it reaches Florida’s shores tomorrow.

Precautionary measures have been put in place, including hurricane warnings and watches along sections of Florida’s Gulf Coast.

“A faster motion toward the north and north-northeast is expected through early Wednesday while Idalia approaches the Gulf coast of Florida. A turn toward the northeast and east-northeast is forecast late Wednesday and Thursday, bringing the center of Idalia near or along the coasts of Georgia and the Carolinas,” the NHC said. “Rapid intensification is expected before landfall, and Idalia is forecast to be a major hurricane when it reaches the Gulf coast of Florida Wednesday morning.”

Mandatory evacuation orders have been instituted in certain regions. Idalia poses a significant risk of inducing life-threatening storm surge submergence in parts of the Gulf Coast, accompanied by a high likelihood of flash and urban flooding, as emphasized by the hurricane center.

If you are in #Idalia‘s path, you TODAY IS YOUR LAST DAY TO PREPARE.

Wind speeds will increase to tropical storm force tonight/tomorrow morning in the hurricane warning area, and continue to increase – making further preparation impossible. If an evacuation has been ordered,… pic.twitter.com/2LmcJyb9py

Hurricane #Idalia will likely be an unprecedented event for many locations in the Florida Big Bend. Looking back through recorded history, NO major hurricanes have ever moved through the Apalachee Bay. When you try to compare this storm to others, DON’T. In response to the looming threat, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken action by activating the National Guard. Concurrently, President Joe Biden has granted approval for an emergency declaration, as stated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
