Lew Palter, Titanic Actor, Dies at 94

A beloved actor and teacher, renowned for his role in James Cameron’s Titanic, has passed away, his family says.

Lew Palter, who portrayed the retail tycoon Isidor Strauss in the film, lost his battle with lung cancer at the age of 94 on May 21. His daughter, Catherine Palter, confirmed the news to The Hollywood reporter.

Lew Palter’s performance in Titanic will forever be etched in the hearts of many. One particular scene stands out, where his character Isidor and his wife Ida embraced each other amidst the sinking ship, surrounded by encroaching water.

Interestingly, his portrayal gained renewed attention when it was discovered that he portrayed an ancestor of OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush’s spouse.

Stockton Rush was one of five people who died during a treacherous descent in the Titan submersible while attempting to witness the Titanic wreckage firsthand.
