Over the weekend, a Michigan man who used social media in an attempt to expose pedophiles was killed in a shooting during a dispute with an individual he had accused of being a predator, according to the police.

Robert Wayne Lee, 40, had a combined social media following of over 60,000 on Instagram and Facebook, where he was known as “Boopac Shakur.” He would adopt the persona of a 15-year-old girl to lure potential predators and call police for their arrest, a tactic that law enforcement officials consider dangerous.

On Friday evening around 10:30 p.m., Lee was in a restaurant in Pontiac when he confronted two people at a table. Lee had accused one of them, an 18-year-old male, of being a pedophile and punched him, according to the sheriff’s office. No further information was provided regarding the credibility of his accusation.

The situation quickly escalated, resulting in one of the suspects discharging a firearm, as detailed in a news release by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. Lee was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

While Lee’s “one-man crusade has led to the arrest and criminal charges being filed against several men,” police wrote in a news release, “he has also mistakenly identified someone as a sexual predator who was not.”

Two individuals were apprehended on Saturday afternoon in connection with the shooting. The suspected shooter, 17, and the second individual, 18, are both believed to be residents of Pontiac, according to the sheriff’s office.

The case is currently under investigation, and the sheriff’s office anticipated handing it over to prosecutors for potential charges on Sunday or Monday.
