A community in southern Mississippi is in mourning following the tragic death of a 6-year-old girl who was struck and killed by a vehicle in her own driveway on Sunday afternoon.
The incident occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. in Smith County, located about 60 miles southeast of Jackson, as detailed in a Facebook post by Smith County Sheriff Joel Houston.
Describing it as a “tragic accident,” Sheriff Houston mentioned that someone reported to Smith County deputies about a 6-year-old child being hit by a vehicle in her own driveway. Tragically, the girl had already passed away by the time first responders and deputies reached the scene. In consideration of the girl’s family, Sheriff Houston stated that the sheriff’s office would refrain from providing additional details at this time, although an investigation is underway.
When questioned, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office declined to comment on whether charges would be filed against the person responsible for the incident. The office clarified that all individuals involved are part of the same family, and the girl was in the family’s yard when the apparent accident occurred.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to the dedicated first responders, Emergency Management, and Paramedics for their swift and compassionate response to the scene,” Sheriff Houston said. “We urge everyone to hold the family and friends of this precious little girl in their prayers during this profoundly difficult time.”
