The mother of a New York City man says a “dangerous” Peloton bike was responsible for her son’s death as the fitness apparatus toppled onto him during his workout, severing his carotid artery. This claim is detailed in a lawsuit filed by Johanna Furtado.

In her legal action, Furtado seeks compensation for various forms of distress, such as “pain, suffering, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life, and other non-economic damages.” Additionally, she pursues restitution for medical expenses and other damages, encompassing the costs associated with both past and future medical and psychiatric care. This lawsuit was filed in March within the confines of New York Supreme Court.

According to the lawsuit’s account, Ryan Furtado was in the midst of a “core” workout on his Peloton bike, a regimen that necessitated dismounting and performing floor exercises. In a tragic turn of events, as he endeavored to rise from the floor, he used the bike for support, but it purportedly “spun around and impacted him on his neck and face, severing his carotid artery in his neck, resulting in his instantaneous demise,” as stated in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit recounted, “Ryan was discovered by the New York Police Department with the subject bike still resting on his neck and face.”

This legal action surfaces following previous instances of Peloton’s equipment safety being called into question. Earlier this year, the company initiated a recall of 2.2 million bikes due to concerns about seat posts breaking during workouts. Furthermore, Peloton’s treadmills have faced scrutiny for causing injuries to children and resulting in one fatality.
