WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – According to the Winston-Salem Police Department, a homeowner took action to protect his property and shot a man who was attempting to break into his storage building. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning on the 4000 block of White Rock Road.
The homeowner had awoken just before 4:30 a.m. after hearing someone approaching their back door on their property, police said. In response, the homeowner armed himself and went outside to investigate. He discovered Christopher Peche trying to break into the storage building after hearing a loud noise from that direction. Confronting the intruder, identified as Peche, the homeowner fired a shot during the confrontation, resulting in Peche being fatally wounded.
Despite the efforts of lifesaving measures, Peche succumbed to his injuries. Further investigation revealed that Peche was a probation absconder from Rockingham County at the time of the incident.
The homeowners have been cooperative with the authorities throughout the investigation, and as of now, no charges are being filed against them.
