Overnight, Millions Become A Year Or Two Younger In South Korea

In a change that took effect on Wednesday, millions of South Koreans’ age changed as the country transitioned to utilizing the international method of age calculation, replacing its long-standing traditional system.

Under the previous age system, individuals were considered one year old at birth, with an additional year added on every January 1st.

While South Korea had already been employing the international standard, which starts counting age from zero at birth and adds a year on each subsequent birthday, the traditional method continued to persist in various aspects of society. However, this changed in December when South Korea enacted laws to eliminate the traditional approach and embrace the international age calculation system entirely.

A government survey conducted in September 2022 revealed that a substantial 86% of South Koreans expressed their intention to adopt the international age counting method for their everyday affairs once the new laws were implemented.
